While we are certainly born with genes that help determine everything from our height to our risk for heart disease, we are making a monumental mistake by assuming that we can not control our genes—especially when it comes to aging. For the first time in history, the medical world has uncovered the miraculous biological processes that control how and why we age the way we do. Truth is, much of aging is actually in our control; we have the power to nudge our biological systems so that even our unwanted genes can work in our favor.

Spicy Vegetable Bean Soup

From the kitchen of Stephanie Yoo, MS, RD

Heart Center of the Rockies very own Dietitian and Chef, Stephanie Yoo, MS, RD was recently featured on Colorado & Company creating recipes that help keep your heart healthy.

Stephanie explained that plant based diets rich in produce, beans, and whole grains provide loads of nutrients and fiber to help your body maintain a healthy cholesterol level. These nutrients work together to help your body produce less Total and LDL cholesterol.  These foods also have the added benefit of being low in saturated and trans fats.  Saturated and trans fats encourage your body to make more Total and LDL cholesterol. The nutrients in produce, beans and whole grains can also help protect the cholesterol your body naturally produces so that it is less likely to contribute to dangerous plaque in your arteries.

Omega-3 fats are a highly beneficial and essential type of fat found in fatty fish like salmon and tuna as well as in walnuts and flax seeds. Omega-3 is a natural anti-inflammatory which can help calm inflammation in an artery.  This inflammation is typically the underlying cause of plaque build-up in arteries.
