Device Clinic
The Device Clinic at Heart Center of Rockies is available to any patient with a pacemaker, a defibrillator, a biventricular pacemaker or defibrillator. The Program Director for the Device Clinic is Dr. C. Timothy Johnson. Dr. Johnson is an electrophysiologist. An electrophysiologist is a cardiologist who has had further training with the electrical system of the heart. Dr. Johnson implants pacemakers, defibrillators, biventricular systems, as well as performs electrophysiology testing and radio frequency ablations.

The Device Clinic is staffed by nurses who work in conjunction with Dr. Johnson to provide comprehensive care for device patients. Currently the clinic is staffed with two registered nurses and a nurse practitioner. We also have two medical assistants as part of our support staff.

The nursing staff is here to provide follow-up care after a pacemaker or defibrillator is implanted. They will monitor the function of the device by using programmers that read the information. This is performed in the office setting. They will also maximize the lifespan of the device, and are able to identify potential problems and provide prompt treatment, as well as provide education for the patients and their families.

One of the latest advances in pacemaker technology is a device called a biventricular pacemaker or biventricular defibrillator. These devices were designed to help people with congestive heart failure. They work by resynchronizing the beating of the heart by simultaneously delivering a pacemaker beat to the left and to the right side of the heart. This effectively causes and improvement in the pumping function of the heart, which helps it to beat more effectively. This usually helps the patient feel better and may allow them to perform their activities of daily living without as many symptoms.

The biventricular device is currently only being implanted for those people who have moderate to severe congestive heart failure, have been on maximum medical therapy, and who also have an underlying electrical disruption of their heart beat. Please talk with your heart failure nurse and/or physician to see if you may be a candidate for this device.

You may also call and ask to speak to one of the Device Clinic staff if you have any questions about the Device Clinic. They are:
