Healthy Lifestyle
A Woman's Heart staff understands that the demands of life don't just go away, but now it's time to focus on you.  Your goal is to learn how to manage life's demands while maintaining a healthy lifestyle for you and your family.  What is the one thing you could do regularly that would make an impact on your health and well-being?  Here are a few suggestions that may help:

Quit Smoking It's easier to say than do but take small steps to cut the amount you smoke per day, week, and month.  Find a support group whether it is friends and family or a community group.

Eat a healthy diet A healthy diet means eating more fruits, veggies, whole grains, low fat mill products, lean meats, fish, poultry, beans, eggs, and nuts.  Think of small attainable changes to your eating habits, like eating one more piece of fruit or veggie per day.

Be more active The current guidelines say 30-45 minutes of moderate exercise 5-7 days a week.  Instead of trying to find time to exercise all at once, try to exercise in 10-15 minute intervals.

Maintain a healthy weight If you are at a healthy weight try to maintain it.  If you are overweight try to lose some weight by decreasing the amount of calories you consume by 100 calories per day; so go for a glass of water instead of soda, and increase your activity level.  Losing even 10 pounds can have a lasting impact on your overall health from lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol levels to improving your self-image.

Control your blood pressure Being physically active, eating a healthy diet that contains more fruits and veggies, and maintaining a healthy weight are all ways to help you control your blood pressure.  If you find that your blood pressure is elevated above 140/90, start keeping a log of all your blood pressure readings, and share it with your physician or healthcare provider.  This will help your healthcare provider decide on the most appropriate and effective treatment for you.

Control your blood cholesterol levels Exercise, a healthy diet, and a healthy weight will help you control your cholesterol levels.  To help increase your HDL levels, try to eat more plant oil foods, such as nuts, avocados, and olive oils.

Reduce your stress level Your emotional well-being is just as essential to a healthy life as are your physical needs.  Try to find an exercise, meditation, relaxation and/or breathing technique to use throughout your day.  Organize and prioritize your day and/or adopt a day plan that includes your chosen relaxation method; take at least 10 minutes for yourself.
